The third-rated Steam game for 2023 is a pizza platformer with Wario Land influences
When it released its first game, a platformer with a pizza theme that was influenced by the Wario Land series, developer Tour De Pizza certainly didn't compromise on its ambitions. The studio's commitment to its goals seems to have paid off.
Pizza Tower, a cheerful little platformer, is the third most popular game on Steam's page for titles launched in 2023. The game proudly describes itself as "a fast-paced 2D platformer inspired by the Wario Land series," and the gameplay footage makes this inspiration very obvious:
You play as the chubby pizza maker Peppino Spaghetti in the video game Pizza Tower. Peppino's shop is threatened by the evil Pizza Face, an actual enormous pizza with a face, who intends to destroy Peppino's eatery from the game's titular tower. Now that Peppino loves his restaurant and probably depends on it for his livelihood, he is highly driven to climb Pizza Tower and end Pizza Face once and for all.
Naturally, there are all kinds of "monsters and other weirdos" along his path, to quote Tour De Pizza. From the advertising, it's easy to envision Peppino barreling over barriers like blocks of cheese and enormous potatoes while also gathering pizza toppings like tomatoes and mushrooms on his route to battle bosses.
It's encouraging to see that the Steam community is responding favourably to Pizza Tower's grand opening after nearly five years of development. Not only is it frequently played, but both players and critics have nothing but praise for it. Pizza Tower has nearly 1,000 "Overwhelmingly Positive" Steam reviews as of this writing, and our friends at PC Gamer gave it an astounding 9/10
